Hello Westview Football Families!

I sincerely hope the summer and moratorium week are treating you well!

IMPORTANT--Fall Football practice starts Monday (8/6-8/10, Five Oaks MS, 3-4:30 pm).

The August calendar has been updated at westviewfootballpride.com (parent section, calendar button), so please check it as soon as possible to work out any potential conflicts. I understand that some players and families may have conflicts as fall sports don't officially start (according to the Beaverton School District calendar) until August 20th, but please be forewarned for future years that football pre-season practice will always begin following moratorium week. Please note the following important events, dates & times:

August 6th - Fall football preseason practice begins
August 11th - Adopt-a-Road cleanup (8-11 am, Seniors and Freshman @ Somerset Christian Church, Juniors and Sophmores @ 7-11)
August 16th - Fall sports registration night (6-8 pm, Westview HS main entrance); Football parent meeting (7 pm, location - TBA)
August 18th - 4th Annual Casino Night Football Fundraiser (4:30-11 pm, Laurel Parc @ Bethany)
August 20th - Fall sports officially begin (double daily practices for football)

Next week is our Westview Youth Football camp week and we will be asking a group of our upper classmen to assist with the Punt, Pass & Kick event (Monday, Five Oaks MS, 6 pm) and serve as camp counselors (T-F, Five Oaks MS, 5-8 pm). This is a great opportunity to connect with the youth football players and practice servitude towards our community. Please know that if your son is helping with the camp, it will be a long, but beneficial week! We still have summer workouts in the morning from 9-11:15 am, as well.

Our first game is August 31st, so we only have 4 weeks to get the boys ready!!! If you have any questions regarding the calendar, or Westview Football, do not hesitate to contact me. Go CATS!

Sincerely,

Coach Fisher

Looking Ahead to 2009 Pre-season

Hello Wildcats;

Both Josh and Robert Casteel have been selected to participate in this summer's high school football showcase, The Les Schwab Bowl. They are very excited and we are all looking forward to watching them get out there on the playing field to represent Westview with Oregon's best high school football players. The Les Schwab Bowl will be played @ PGE Park on Saturday, June 20th (kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m.). We hope to see a large showing from the Westview Community in support of both Josh and Robert. Josh and Robert will be selling tickets to help raise funds to participate in this exciting event. If you are interested in purchasing tickets for the game, please contact me and I will begin generating a ticket order list. Thanks for your attention and continued support of Westview Football.

Sincerely,

A great team victory!...on to round 2 and Sheldon!

Gentlemen...

Friday night was a fantastic team effort and evidence of what we are capable of when we execute and play together. Your efforts were inspiring and we are fired up as a coaching staff for our second round game @ Sheldon. Many of you were part of our trip and win against Sheldon last year. I don't have to tell you (but I will!) that they will be fired up to play us again. They are a well coached team with playoff experience, and not to mention, the defending state champions. However, they are not the team they were last year and they are beatable. It will take another all-around team effort combined with a great week of preparation and focus. I am very excited for this opportunity and I know you are, as well. Monday's practice will be @ 2:55 p.m.; meet in Coach K's room for film and some chalk talk. We will do a recovery workout following film, so bring workout clothes. There is no school Tuesday, and both the boys and girls soccer teams play Tuesday night. With all of us in the playoffs, practice time will be a little erratic due to field availability. I should have the week's schedule mapped out by Monday's practice. See you tomorrow!

Believe to Achieve

I hope you have all had a restful and fun weekend; it's time to go to work! I spent last Friday with a group of students at Nike listening to a panel presentation on Brand Jordan. The panel MC was a man by the name of Howard White, Vice President of Brand Jordan. "H", as he is affectionately known by many, and his moving words inspired me to think of many things. Most notably, the teachers and mentors in my life that instilled so many life-long values in my heart and mind. In his book, Believe to Achieve, Mr. White writes of the mentors, lessons and values that he holds sacred. The following are a few quotes that struck a chord with me and that apply to both sport and life:

On Work - "No matter what happens to you, you are the one in control of how you prepare yourself...To become the best takes a lot of practice and hard work. But if you put a lot of practice and hard work into anything you do, you will become the best you can be. That is all anyone can ever ask of you--that you become the best that you can possibly be."

On Habit - "Any improvement that you decide to make needs your commitment to become a habit. You can't start something new, perform it twice a month, and expect it to become part of you. You must drill yourself constantly and diligently to make it a habit, and only then will it have an affect on your life. And you must constantly replace discouraging, negative messages with positive messages."

On Attitude - "You may not control what happens to you, but you are in control of how you live your life, and your attitude will determine the outcome...Have a great outlook on life--it doesn't cost anything...A positive attitude helps the world and the people in it. A negative attitude hurts the world and hurts you even more...You can control your attitude toward anything and everything that comes into your world."

This week in particular, we need to put in the work necessary to reach our desired outcome Friday night...a win over Southridge. Our pursuit of furthering good habits through embracing work with a positive attitude will be the difference. Focus on what you want, put in the work and go get it! See you tomorrow!

Aloha is coming to town...

Gentlemen...

Nice job this past week! You put yourselves back into the win column and set our team up for an opportunity to earn a playoff birth with a win over Aloha this week. We will be late again this week, starting at 3:55 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Thursday's practice, as always, will be at 2:45 p.m. This is a great week for you to connect with your teachers after school and make sure you are on the right track prior to quarter grades. Aloha will be hungry for success after suffering tough losses the past two weeks. I'm looking forward to a great week of practice...let's prepare like champions! Lastly, this Friday's game we will honor all seniors with a pregame recognition ceremony. We will discuss the details of this during the week, but all seniors should have your parent(s) or guardian(s) attend both the ceremony and the game. This will be our last guaranteed home game for 2008, so let's get it done. See you tomorrow...

Sunset and Homecoming week

Gentlemen,

This week is critical to maintain focus on the job that needs to get done. There will be a lot going on around school and surrounding the game, Friday night. We should enjoy the festivities of the week, but intensify our effort and pursuit of a much needed win. Sunset will be prepared for us and they will show up Friday night expecting a win. Our ability to prepare, match Sunset's intensity and play our best football will be the difference. Remember, practice is late this week. Let's get after it this week and take care of the little details that make a team effort possible. Keep the faith!
